Douglas Murray is a recently retired NHL defenseman who was drafted by the San Jose Sharks back in 1999. He spent the majority of his NHL career in San Jose where he played as a shutdown defenseman who was known to consistently deliver hits that intensified the atmosphere of games. Over 451 games played, Murray registered 59 points (6g, 53a) and still holds the franchise record for all-time hits (1078) and is tied for most hits in a game (9).

He attended Cornell University where he played four seasons for the Cornell Big Red hockey team. During his college years, he was voted 1st team All-American twice and was named team captain for his senior year. Murray spent the next few years playing for the San Jose Sharks minor league affiliate, the Cleveland Barons. It was there that he proved he had the talent to be in the NHL and eventually became a mainstay and fan favorite for the Sharks.

His defensive ability and physical presence was noted outside of the NHL and was invited to play on team Sweden for the 2008 Ice Hockey World Championships as well as the 2010 Winter Olympics. Murray announced his retirement in October of 2016 and is now the President of the Sharks Alumni Foundation.
